The Ohio House Health Committee has commenced hearings on a pivotal piece of legislation titled the Jeff, Dave, and Angie Patient Right to Try Act, introduced as House Bill 12. The sponsors of the bill, State Representatives Jennifer Gross and D.J. Swearingen, announced the beginning of deliberations. Representative Gross had previously advocated for this policy in the last General Assembly.
The proposed legislation seeks to address several key issues concerning medical treatment. It aims to safeguard Ohio residents' access to off-label medications that may be lifesaving. Additionally, it intends to ensure that healthcare providers, pharmacies, and pharmacists retain the ability to prescribe and fill off-label prescriptions. Moreover, it seeks to protect the freedom of speech of health professionals, allowing them to express medical opinions that may differ from those of health and licensing bodies.
“House Bill 12 is life-saving legislation that provides the medical freedom needed for prescribers and patients to direct their care and optimize health outcomes,” said Representative Gross.
Representative Swearingen emphasized the importance of the legislation by stating, “This issue is very important to the wellbeing of patients in Ohio and the providers who work hard every day to keep them healthy.”
Further consideration of the Jeff, Dave, and Angie Patient Right to Try Act will continue in the sessions of the House Health Committee.
