State Rep. Gary Click | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representative Gary Click has voted in favor of designating the 1905 Wright Flyer III as Ohio's official state airplane. The decision was made when the Ohio House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 24. This historic aircraft, first flown by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Huffman Prairie near Dayton, is recognized as the world's first practical airplane, achieving a flight duration of 39 minutes and 24 seconds on October 5, 1905.
"Ohio’s tradition of leading the way is exemplified in the Wright brothers as much as in anyone, which makes it fitting to adopt the Wright Flyer III as our State’s official airplane,” said Click.
The Wright Flyer III holds the distinction of being the only airplane in the United States designated as a National Historic Landmark. The original plane underwent careful restoration with guidance from Orville Wright in 1947 and is currently exhibited at the Wright Brothers Aviation Center located within Carillon Historic Park in Dayton.
The bill will now proceed to the Governor's office for further consideration.
