State Representatives Gary Click and Nick Santucci have introduced the America First Act in Ohio, targeting unlawful immigration within the state. The bill aims to align with federal immigration policies while addressing issues at the state level.
Gary Click stated, "Ohioans are charitable, gracious, kind, and welcoming. However, we expect those who would join us to reciprocate by following our laws, including immigration laws." He emphasized that the act does not supersede federal policy but supports it by addressing federally determined unlawful immigration.
The proposed legislation makes it illegal for individuals unlawfully present in the United States to enter or remain in Ohio. Violators face a $500 fine and one year in jail for a first offense, with increased penalties for subsequent offenses. They must leave Ohio within 72 hours of release.
Provisions exist for those seeking visa extensions or refugee status. Click acknowledged that this bill is not a comprehensive solution but can complement existing policies. "The America First Act sends the message that we welcome lawful immigrants," he said.
Click highlighted concerns about illegal immigration leading to human trafficking and sex crimes, stating that such activities diminish citizenship value and discourage healthy immigration processes. He also criticized current federal border policies under the Biden-Harris administration as contributing to an influx of illegal immigrants involved in serious crimes.
The act seeks to affirm Ohio's commitment to legal immigration by prioritizing law-abiding immigrants while discouraging unlawful entry into the state.
