The House Commerce and Labor Committee passed House Bill 327 today, a piece of legislation designed to ensure that newly hired employees in Ohio are legally eligible for employment in the United States. The bill was introduced by State Rep. D.J. Swearingen (R-Huron) and State Rep. Scott Wiggam (R-Wayne County).

House Bill 327 mandates that employers use the E-Verify program, a free internet-based service that verifies the employment eligibility of new hires within 3-5 seconds by checking work permits, visas, and citizenship status.

“This legislation ensures that we employ a legal workforce here in Ohio,” stated Swearingen. “Our goal is to support employers who are following the law in their employment practices and the thousands of skilled and talented Ohioans that are ready to get to work.”

The requirements outlined in House Bill 327 will apply to contractors engaged in state or local public works construction, non-residential construction contractors, and any employer with 75 or more employees within the state.

House Bill 327 now moves to the House floor for a vote.
