State Representative Gary Click (R-Vickery) has put forth the Citizen Initiated Voter Integrity Act, aiming to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of Ohio's voter registration rolls. The proposed legislation, known as HB 457, seeks to streamline the process of updating voter information when individuals change their address within the state.

Under the Act, individuals registering to vote at a new Ohio address would have the option to disclose any former addresses where they are currently registered. This declaration would authorize the board of elections to consolidate the voter file, preventing duplicate registrations in the voter rolls. Click emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "This bill creates a more conspicuous and convenient method for voters to assist in eliminating clutter from the rolls."

Highlighting the practicality of the proposal, Click added, "It’s a common-sense proposal that should equip elections officials with another tool in the belt to carry out their responsibilities and increase confidence in Ohio’s elections." The current process, which relies on an 'authorization to cancel' form, has proven to be underutilized, leading to challenges in promptly resolving duplicate registrations.

The Citizen Initiated Voter Integrity Act is set to undergo review in the House Government Oversight Committee in the upcoming weeks. If passed, the legislation aims to provide a more streamlined and effective mechanism for maintaining voter registration accuracy in Ohio.
