State Rep. Douglas Swearingen, Jr. | The Ohio House of Representatives
In an effort to protect Ohio's workforce and address the state's workforce needs, Representatives Wiggam and Swearingen have introduced legislation that would require employers to use the E-Verify program. The program, which confirms an employee's employment eligibility with federal records, aims to streamline the verification process and prevent the exploitation of illegal workers.
Wiggam highlighted the importance of the E-Verify program in protecting Ohio's workers. He stated, "Once implemented, the E-Verify program will help protect Ohio's workforce against job loss and lower wages by making it harder for human traffickers to exploit illegal workers in Ohio." The bill aims to combat illegal labor trafficking, which has a detrimental impact on Ohio's workforce.
Swearingen emphasized the benefits of the legislation for both employers and workers. He stated, "This bill will streamline and ease the hiring process for our employers, while simultaneously empowering the Ohio worker." By requiring employers to use E-Verify, the legislation aims to simplify the hiring process and ensure that Ohio workers are given fair opportunities.
The proposed bill outlines several key requirements. It would mandate all contractors and sub-contractors on public works construction projects to use E-Verify for their project workforce. Additionally, contractors and sub-contractors on all other construction projects, excluding residential and agricultural construction, would also be required to use E-Verify. Furthermore, employers with seventy-five or more employees would be obligated to use the program.
While the legislation is still awaiting a bill number and House committee assignment, its introduction marks an important step towards protecting Ohio's workforce and addressing the state's workforce needs. By implementing the E-Verify program, employers will be able to verify the eligibility of potential employees within a matter of seconds, ensuring a more efficient and secure hiring process.
Ohio joins several other states that have already implemented or are considering the use of the E-Verify program. This move reflects a growing recognition of the program's effectiveness in preventing the exploitation of illegal workers and promoting a fair and legal workforce.
As the legislation progresses through the legislative process, it is expected to generate further discussions and debates. However, with its focus on protecting Ohio's workers and empowering employers, the bill holds the potential to make a significant impact on the state's workforce and economy.
