The Bluest Eye was one of the first novels to deal with the impact of racism and the cultural idealization of whiteness on the psyche of a child and the larger Black community to which she belongs.
Set in the author's hometown of Lorain, Ohio in the 1940s and targeting both a teen and adult audience, Toni Morrison's first novel also has a long history of people seeking to ban it from school libraries.
Our guest discussion leader is Kristin Distel, who has a PhD in English Literature and who has published articles on the themes of gendered shame, guilt, and trauma in Morrison's work.
